Yes, that's right.. it took seven years to write this song. Not seven continuous years, but seven years on and off. Here's how it happened. One day, sometime in the late 1980's, Jason and I (Steve) were jamming in his basement. He started playing this funky little beat and said "Hey, put something to this.." so I started playing a twangy space-guitar flatpicked rhythm. There just happened to be a boom box recording us at the time. We liked the idea, but never did anything further with it. Sometime around 1990-91 I was fiddling around with my little Casio keyboard, and I wrote a little Em-D-C-D-Em finger exercise. Being a guitarist, I was trying to get my fingers accustomed to a keyboard. Anyway, I liked the little ditty I wrote, and so I filed it away into my memory for later use. In 1993, after Jason, Tom, and I had formed Lost Frontier, Jason mentioned the old space-twang idea we had cooked up years earlier (he had come across the old recording by accident). We decided to develop the idea further.. as we did this, I remembered the little keyboard ditty I used to play. I picked the keyboard excercise out on my guitar, and voila! We had an intro to the twangy song! All we had to do was come up with a chorus and bridge, and it all fell together in no time. When I wrote the lyrics, I was thinking of someone longing for the lost years of their youth. After the song was written and titled, I realized that the title was only too appropriate.. look at all "The Lost Years" between the start and completion of this song!
